Audit current software usage

Once you've a policy and set of procedures, you then need to take an inventory of your current software assets. Only by knowing exactly what software is running within your organisation - and who's using it - can you determine how to succeed.

An accurate inventory will tell you:

  • If you're using the most recent or suitable software
  • If you're using software you don't need
  • If there is other software you should be using
  • If you have illegal, unauthorised or unlicensed software within your business

There are many auditing tools that facilitate the creation of an accurate inventory. I recommend you try out our free auditing downloads or go to the list of asset resource management providers.

But remember, you also have to properly manage the documentation and materials as well. You should carefully store manuals, reference literature and proof of purchase as well as original copies of the software in a secure place.
